Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art

I

Summary: informative text about the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, how to get there, tickets info, what to see.

The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art is housed in a building designed by architect Richard Meier is a magnificent master piece. The structure is represented in the style of modernism and it is this large: 120 by 35 meters, white, has much of its southern elevation glazed, providing the visitor with views across the plaza, and allowing natural light into the interior. It invites contrasting starkly with the rather down-at-heel surroundings it is intended to help regenerate. In this area you will also find lot of nice Barcelona Hotels where you will be able to relax and enjoy the great view.

The sculptural elements of the main frontage show themselves to full effect in the Mediterranean sun in the square, while effectively filtering the sunlight entering the building. Inside generous circulation space and ramps benefit from the sunlight, while allowing a more subdued light level to permeate through to the rather plainer exhibition spaces. The narrow white columns, railings, glass bricks and different varieties of white skin are straight from Meier's earlier houses, but used here with great effect. The galleries have restricted views, mainly through slotted openings in the metal clad north facade, with full height doors at ground floor. All are fully controlled with simple, discreet, manual fabric sunshades. The overhead monitors at roof-level are also fully adjustable with louvres above inner lay-lights, and the artificial lighting and air-conditioning systems are generally extremely well addressed with minimum intrusion.

The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art works from the concept that there is no “public” only “publics” consisting of specific and differentiated groups, the museum ceases to be a mere producer of exhibitions and becomes a purveyor of different services for different subjects. The exhibition is then an experience on a par with that of workshops, conferences, audiovisual activities, publications, etc. All of these experiences are defined by a series of discursive lines which lend thematic coherence. This museum will show you how artists have continued to push boundaries and definitions previously accepted, create new methods of discourse using multi-dimensional techniques or unusual objects, and just keep blurring the lines between so-called high art and low art.

The exhibitions of the museum are many and always changing, giving space and time to many different artists although its integrates permanent a collection for each exhibition there’s a different ticket however you can buy a All Museum Access for 7,5€ for adults and reduces for 6€. On Wednesdays (except for holyday) the admission costs 3,5€ for everyone. MACBA is a short walk to the west from La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya. Metro lines 1 and 3 (Catalunya station). The museum is closed on Tuesdays. Its opening hours vary by the day and the time of year.

Therefore if you are going to visit the city of Barcelona the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art is a must-go. With the family or with the friends, this is an interesting museum for all ages with attractive activities you can’t miss. You will not regret the time you will spend in this museum.
